Why do we get Ingrowns?

Is there any help for treating very stubborn, chronic ingrown hairs? - The Dermatology Specialists

Understanding why we get ingrown hairs is the first step to preventing future development. These would be the most common reasons why you might’ve gotten your ingrowns:

  • Shaving too closely to your skin
  • Tight clothing
  • Using a dull razor
  • Dry skin or Lack of exfoliation
  • Improper waxing technique
  • Using tweezers incorrectly

The fastest ways to get rid of current ingrown hairs

  1. Stop Hair Removal Temporarily – Give your skin time to heal, that means NO shaving, waxing or plucking the area until bumps start to go away.
  2. Use a Warm Compress – You can use a clean, warm washcloth to place over the area bringing the hairs to the surface
  3. Exfoliate – Use a chemical exfoliant containing AHA,BHA or enzymes to help shed away dead skin cells and unclog your pores

  1. DON’T pick or squeeze the bumps! – This will inevitably lead to scarring and hyperpigmentation which is what we don’t want.

How to prevent those ingrowns for good!

  1. Exfoliate Regularly – Gently exfoliating around 2-3 times a week will make a huge difference, bring the hairs to the surface and unclogging pores
  2. Use a Sharp, Clean Razor or Trimmer
  3. Shave In Hair Growth Direction – This will stop any infections, irritation and trapping your hair underneath the skin.
  4. Moisturize Area Daily
  5. Try Laser Hair Removal – If ingrowns continue to be a persistent issue for you, laser hair removal is one of the most effective treatments that also last long term.
